Begin Your Garden Plan for 2025

After a couple of years of pretty good weather, we were due for a wild weather year this year. Comes with the territory. If you’re feeling a bit frustrated by the insane heat followed by huge rain, we’re with you. Of course, this is just the weather in Asheville, North Carolina. If you're reading elsewhere, maybe you've had better luck?

The flower farm is chugging along. Nothing catastrophic. A few disappointments, but we’ve learned a lot. This year makes me appreciate the good weather years. Fingers crossed it only gets better from here.

As we do every July, we’re shifting our focus to the next annual cycle! We’re prepping now for crops that will bloom in 2025.

Prepping for fall planting begins with bed space. We’re on a mission to have fresh beds ready for seeding and planting in late September and early October. If you love winter growing and subsequent spring blooms, I encourage you to do the same!

Now is a great time to throw a tarp or cardboard on weedy areas. Come back to that spot in 6 weeks, and your soil will be much easier to rework and plant! Just remember to weigh down your tarp or cardboard. You can use bricks, cinder blocks, or simply piles of soil scooped up from the ground. We use sandbags filled with soil, which are very convenient tools.

September and October are great months to plant flowers for spring. That’s true for perennials, but also annuals that like cold, such as larkspur, feverfew, dianthus and poppies. We’ll also begin planting anemones and ranunculus in October, and we’ll plant tulips in November or early December once the ground temperature falls below 55 degrees.

Want to plant along with us? We’ll have seeds, bulbs, and corms to share with you in the coming months!

Get your beds ready now! Wet days are great for pulling weeds — they come out more easily!
