Our Flower Farm in Winter
Happy New Year! I spent January 1 on the flower farm, and I though you might enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at our projects.
Flower farming doesn't stop when the weather gets cold. In fact, it seems we are busier than ever getting ready for spring! There are so many wonderful blooms at the flower farm — blooming now and ready to bloom in February and March. I spent New Year’s Day exploring what’s growing!

This tunnel has poppies, snapdragons, cress, sweet william, larkspur, and more! They’ll start blooming in March and April.
The farm has a very particular kind of beauty this time of year. My eyes get starved for green, so inside the tunnels, it’s refreshing to see plants growing. Outside, the land is a million shades of brown, and anything that’s messy really stands out. Still, it’s beginning to look like a real farm! We built these three high tunnels in the field this fall. We’ll have five smaller ones going up in the space to the left of them in January.

We built these tunnels on pre-existing terraces that we finessed with a skid steer. In February or March, we’ll bring the skid steer back to make some corrections now that we know more about what we’re working with. We’ll also use it to plant the first round of perennial shrubs! Things like hydrangeas, tea olive and spirea.

The heated greenhouse was probably my biggest project of 2025. (Although we also opened a new store and moved the farm, so there were lots of big projects.) It was certainly the most expensive project. Time will tell if I made good decisions are not. Like most decisions, it’s a mixed bag. I could have spent more or less money. I could have gotten better or worse results. I’d never done it before, so the learning curve was steep. Plus, the greenhouse industry doesn’t have ready-made solutions for flower growing in our region, so there’s still some adaptation that has to happen.
Regardless, we’ve harvested about 1,000 stems of flowers since November! So it’s happening. We’re hoping for many more for Valentine’s Day!

We have plenty of local flowers — plus some imports — in the flower shop! Come see us at 250 Haywood Road. We’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
